The most important step in getting your TaxBit account started is to connect all of your exchanges and other transaction sources. Although you may want to check which sources are supported by viewing out "Supported Integrations" article.
Exchanges typically offer three different integration methods: OAuth, API Keys and CSV Uploads. Some exchanges offer a CSV upload approach, which is more manual in nature. This article deep dives into the API Key method.
In the "Add Sources" section of TaxBit, you’ll be asked to provide very specific credentials in order to link your chosen exchange. Most commonly, you will see two fields: Key and Secret.
Your API Key is the unique ID (a random series of letters and numbers) provided when you create a new API within your exchange account. TaxBit uses that Key to recognize the specific API we are allowed to use to sync your transactions for tax purposes. This is important because TaxBit APIs must be assigned read permissions during the API creation process in order to successfully gather your transaction data. If the Key provided is not assigned read privileges within your exchange, the sync will likely fail. For more information on how TaxBit keeps your information safe and secure, click HERE.
Please Note: The API Key will always be available for you to revisit in your exchange account, so no need to write it down.
Your API Secret is another unique ID in a similar format, which acts as a password for the API Key you’ve assigned to TaxBit. The Secret is typically provided to you at the end of the API creation process within your exchange.
Please Note: Unlike the API Key, you’ll want to write the Secret down or save it when you are creating your API, since it will not be provided to you again.
Once you have correctly entered your Key and Secret, you’ll be ready to click the "Connect" button. You’ll get a notification that your exchange is now syncing with TaxBit. When the sync is finished, you will get another notification indicating that you’ve synced successfully.
Having trouble? No worries! Please check out the following articles if you run into issues:
