Duplicate transactions can occur for a few different reasons. Maybe you have CSV that contains the same data as what’s being brought in by an API. There might have been an error when syncing your exchange or wallet integration. Or maybe transaction was added manually when it was already recorded in your account.
Regardless of the reason, duplicate transactions, specifically duplicate disposals, are another common cause of missing cost basis. The reason for this is simple: if your disposal is duplicated and the crypto acquisitions used in that disposal are not duplicated, you’re going to need twice as much of that asset to cover that disposal.
The solution to this problem may seem simple: just delete the duplicate! However, it is important to figure out where the duplicate is coming from in order to make sure it doesn’t pop back up the next time you sync your transactions.
