Connecting exchanges with your TaxBit account is critical for accurately reporting on your taxes. When you attempt to connect an exchange with an API key and it doesn't work, it can be frustrating! We totally understand that and want to help you remedy the issues as easily as possible.
API Set-Up Guides
If you haven’t seen them already, we have some great step-by-step guides to help walk you through the API set-up process! Feel free to check out the full list HERE. (This is just the list of guides we have now. More to come!)
If you have already gone through all of the steps in the API set-up guide for your exchange, then we have some other suggestions to help troubleshoot!
How Do I Know the API Connection Failed?
Let’s explain what the API key and API secret look like and where they come from. In general, both the API key and secret are usually randomized alphanumeric characters. Of course, each API key and secret is unique to each exchange and account.
If there was an issue with the credentials you typed into TaxBit, you may see three dots appear for a brief period and then disappear. More likely though, you will see “Credentials are Invalid. Please verify and try again.” appearing in red.
Adding Credentials Correctly
The most common reason that an exchange will not connect is because the API key and API Secret have been pasted into the wrong field. Double check that you have copied and then pasted each one into the correct field.
If the API key and API secret are in the correct fields, then the next thing you will want to check is if you entered the information correctly. It's important that the information matches exactly as it was provided by the exchange or the sync will not work.
Sometimes, some characters may get left off when you are copying the Key and Secret from the exchange. Double check that you are highlighting the entire thing before pasting it into TaxBit!
How Do I Know if My Exchange Synced?
The difference between an exchange being unable to connect, and an exchange failing to sync, is the message that you will get! If your exchange connects, you will get a confirmation message and a notification letting you know that a sync has started. If your exchange is not connecting, you will remain on the screen where you type in your credentials and you will not receive a confirmation message.
If you continue to see issues with your exchange not connecting, please reach out to us directly using the in-app Support widget in the bottom-right of your screen. You can also email firstname.lastname@example.org, and we'd love to help you out!
